With the F1 done for another season, we take a look at McLaren’s double ascendancy and how this year Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri redefined a Formula 1 era
Formula One is a sport defined by its dominant eras. Schumacher’s unrelenting dominance at Ferrari. Vettel’s unprecedented hot streak at Red Bull. The era of precision and power that Hamilton oversaw at Mercedes. But something feels radically different about McLaren’s comeback in the 2024 and 2025 seasons. This isn’t just a recovery; it’s a resurgence. It represents a rebalancing of what contemporary domination looks like.
The backbone of McLaren’s comeback has been two drivers whose careers are booming in tandem. A young British sensation, Lando Norris, who has finally realised his full potential, paired with an even younger phenomenal Australian talent, Oscar Piastri, whose poise belies his years, have become one of the grid’s most balanced and dangerous lineups. As evidence of their rise, the Constructors’ Championship was secured before the 2025 season even ended. What remained was a considerably more intimate tale: two colleagues, competing for the same individual championship, bound not by animosity, but by immense mutual respect.

PRECISION AND POISE: LANDO NORRIS
For quite some time Lando Norris has been considered among his generation’s most exceptionally talented drivers. This season, he honed his game into something more precise and effective, replacing the occasional recklessness of his younger years with a cool, surgical poise. A sense of command has pervaded his campaign. Perfect laps in qualifying. Measured overtakes. Minimised risks. An absence of emotional instability.
Many in the paddock had faith in Norris’s potential, and this year, he finally unlocked it. He still has that endearing charisma, but now he drives with the calm confidence of a driver who knows how to spearhead a championship push. Norris didn’t simply ascend. He transformed, sharpening his talent into something unmistakably elite.

“THE SILENT STORM” OF OSCAR PIASTRI
If Norris represents refinement, Oscar Piastri represents reasoning. Australia has been waiting for a true world title contender and Piastri has arrived with a strategy unlike any other. He is analytical without ever seeming cold, carrying himself with a quiet confidence that never feels forced. His driving is defined by calm, precise execution, with every input measured and intentional. Piastri absorbs immense pressure with ease, delivering exactly what the car demands at exactly the right moment. Even early in his Formula One career, he proved he could match Norris in raw pace.

THE PAPAYA SYNERGY
What truly sets McLaren’s pairing apart is what’s missing. There is no resentment. No public fractures. No psychological warfare. Instead of discouraging one another, which is a hallmark of so many great teammate rivalries, Norris and Piastri encourage one another. It is this synergy that has allowed McLaren to soar to heights that no single driver could have reached on their own.

THE McLAREN MACHINE
McLaren’s return to the top was no fluke. It was built on a reorganisation of values, clear leadership, and relentless iteration. Under Andrea Stella’s leadership, the team rebuilt its foundations, rethought its technical philosophy, and reestablished its infrastructure to compete at the highest level.
The end result is a stable, composed chassis that makes exceptional use of aerodynamics. It is a car that rewards bravery but punishes hesitation. In terms of lap time and race-long stability, it is second to none. Most importantly, it is an ideal match for both drivers.
Consecutive Constructors’ Championships provide a comprehensive view. This was more than just a comeback for McLaren. This was the emergence of a new McLaren.

THE VERSTAPPEN VARIABLE
Max Verstappen is still the name that comes up in every championship debate. The four-time world champion is, by many accounts, still the best driver on the grid. He is the benchmark that defines the era. In Las Vegas, with the paddock’s red carpet filled with A-list superstars, that benchmark was on full display. Verstappen controlled the race from start to finish, taking a decisive victory on a night that turned the championship picture on its head.

Both McLaren cars were dramatically disqualified after post-race scrutineering revealed that the thickness of the plank, also known as the skid block, on their MCL39s had fallen below the minimum 9 mm limit permitted after wear. What should have been another McLaren double-podium became a crushing reversal, and Verstappen’s win tightened the title fight at a critical moment. The double disqualification demonstrated how harsh Formula One’s restrictions can be.

Nowhere was this dynamic clearer than in the masterclass at São Paulo. Fans remembered 2024, when Verstappen won from P17. In 2025, he provided a terrifying echo: after a pit lane start, he unleashed an electrifying performance, carving through the field in a 17-place surge to claim 3rd. Fans were left questioning if Verstappen is even human after he ran a masterclass for two years in a row in Brazil. But this time, the inhuman drive wasn’t enough.

At the front, Lando Norris never cracked. He absorbed the pressure of the charging Red Bull, managed his race to perfection, and took the checkered flag. That single race tells the story of the season. In any other year, Verstappen’s “career highlight” recovery would have been the dominant headline.
In 2025, it was the stunning backdrop for a McLaren victory. Right up to the season’s final laps, Verstappen remained the ever-present danger and the enduring threat. He forced the McLaren drivers to be perfect, and he will be an obstacle for McLaren to overcome for the next few years. Laurent Mekies, who took over as Team Principal and CEO of Oracle Red Bull Racing in July 2025, brought the leadership push that reignited Max Verstappen’s championship fight.

A NEW ERA
McLaren have done more than just return to the front. They have remapped the course of Formula One. With the Constructors’ trophy secured and two drivers at the pinnacle of their craft, how they won is what defines this new era. The age of the lone-wolf dynasty is over. The “Double Ascendancy” has begun, and the future is papaya.
